Jhane's Take on the Tapestry Totes

These totes are made at the same North Carolina mill as the tapestry pillows, and the weaving logic is closely related — but the material choices are different for good reason.

Unlike the pillows, these totes are woven with a 100% polyester tapestry construction. The mill made that choice for durability. A tote has to handle abrasion, weight, and constant movement, and a polyester warp holds up better over time under those conditions. It’s a structural decision, not a decorative one.

The designs are woven tightly, as tapestry should be, so the imagery is as crisp as this technique allows. Like all tapestry weaving, the color comes from a limited yarn system — not printing — and everything you see is the result of how colored yarns are combined, not applied. There are hundreds of weave structures involved in translating the patterns, which is still something I find remarkable.

The straps are cotton webbing, which gives the tote a natural, comfortable feel in the hand and a bit of contrast against the woven body. The bag is lined in black fabric (most likely polyester), which helps the tote hold its shape and stand up to everyday use.

The sewing is good and straightforward. There’s no interior pocket and no closure at the top — which is worth knowing. This is a simple, open tote, meant to be easy to use rather than compartmentalized.

Like the pillows, these totes are grounded in interior textile tradition, just adapted for a different kind of wear and stress. They’re sturdy, graphic, and built to be used — not treated delicately.

I see these as functional objects that also carry a lot of textile history with them. Once you understand how and why they’re made the way they are, they make complete sense.
