Jhane's Take on the Porcelain Magnets

These little square magnets feel almost like a library to me — a compact way to document some of my favorite patterns over time.

Some of the designs come from my past, others were created specifically for this medium, which makes the collection feel both retrospective and current. At 2” square, they’re small enough to live anywhere, but large enough to really show the pattern.

They’re made from porcelain with a glossy finish, so the colors come through rich and saturated. The surface is smooth and reflective, which suits the scale and gives them a finished, object-like quality rather than feeling like paper ephemera.

One practical note worth mentioning: not all refrigerators are magnetic. Mine isn’t. Luckily, I have a 1970s modern kitchen with St. Charles metal cabinets, so that’s where mine live.

I use them mostly as recipe holders when I’m cooking, which feels like a nice, everyday way to interact with pattern — functional, visual, and quietly satisfying.

They’re small things, but they carry a lot: history, process, and the pleasure of seeing a design distilled down to its essentials.
